Osseous Surgery
At Newnan Periodontics and Dental Implants, we’re here to help you restore your gum and overall oral health. Our experienced team is experienced in treating gum disease and issues resulting from gum disease, from minimal to severe. Osseous surgery is utilized for patients with severe periodontal disease that has begun to affect the bone and gum tissue. Dr. Mindy Gil and our team are experienced in providing you with effective procedures to help save your teeth, such as osseous surgery.
Osseous surgery is expertly performed by Dr. Mindy Gil and is a minor oral surgery performed under local anesthetic. The area is numbed and gum tissue is folded back from the tooth so that the infected area is visible. Then, harmful bacteria on the tooth and gums is removed, and the tooth is smoothed out and reshaped, eliminating the gum pockets. Finally, the gum tissue is put back and stitched up.
Dr. Mindy Gil will send you home with detailed instructions and information on how to properly care for your gums for healing.
Why Is Osseous Surgery Necessary?
Osseous surgery is necessary when non-surgical treatment is not an option or when periodontal disease has spread too deep into the bone of the mouth and teeth. When periodontal disease progresses, the gum tissue begins to pull away from the teeth, exposing more of the root and creating areas known as gum pockets. As these gum pockets grow and deepen, there is more space for harmful bacteria to thrive in. Eventually, this bacteria can deeply invade and damage your gums and teeth, leading to tooth decay and loss–this is when osseous surgery is the best option for treatment.
